Constellation Loop Trail Prescott Arizona

When you visit Prescott Arizona you have to hike the Dells at least once. Constellation Trails is an excellent place to start exploring the Dells rock formations. These granite boulders create an interesting hiking experience.

At times the hiking trail is slick, while walking on the granite rock surfaces, as well some dirt and sand pathways. Wear hiking shoes or footwear with good gripping power especially when the trail is wet.

Hiking the Constellation Loop trail is great for all ages and skill levels. There isn’t much elevation change and you can do a short loop or take all the side trails and make it a longer hike.

Where is Constellation Loop Trail?

The Constellation Trails hiking area is on the west side of Route 89 across the highway from the Phippen Museum.

It takes about 10 – 15 minutes to drive there from Prescott, just head north on Route 89 and watch for the sign about 6 miles north of Prescott and take the roundabout to the parking lot.

What are The Dells?

The Granite Dells in Prescott AZ are an interesting geological feature. Created over millions of years, the Dells consist of granite rock formations including large boulders.

Formed from magma pushed up to the Earth’s surface, the huge rock formation became splintered and cubes of rocks split off.

Eventually the corners rounded due to erosion and giant boulders scattered the landscape.

Constellation Trail Hike Description

From the parking area you can see the hiking trailhead and a sign with a map of the Constellation Trails routes.

There isn’t much shade on these trails so it’s wise to bring a wide brimmed hat, water, and sunscreen.

Follow the outside trail to make your hike one big loop. Or take some of the inner trails that wind through the rock formations.

Maps are posted at regular intervals along the trails.

You can enjoy many other hikes around Prescott.

The trails at Watson Lake are my favorite hikes in Prescott because the views of the lake are beautiful and you can hike around the rock formations. There’s also a waterfall at the dam and lots of shade at this spot so it’s perfect for a picnic.

All the lakes near Prescott have hiking trails for you to enjoy, and each one is worth visiting.

A unique hiking experience is Wolf Creek Falls in the Prescott National Forest.
