Cape Sounion & Temple of Poseidon Tour from Athens

A day trip from Athens to the Temple of Poseidon at sunset was one of the highlights of my solo trip to Greece in spring 2026. While I could have rented a car and done the tour on my own, I’m glad I chose to do a small group tour instead. I learned so much from the tour guide, enjoyed hassle-free transportation, and got to meet some wonderful people on my tour.

Located on Cape Sounion, the Temple of Poseidon is one of the most important ruins around Athens. Perched atop the cliffs overlooking the Aegean Sea, the temple dedicated to the god of the sea was built in the 5th century BCE, and it’s spectacular to see it anytime. But seeing the Temple of Poseidon at sundown is magical.

I booked the Temple of Poseidon tour for my last night in Athens, and it was a magnificent way to end my journey to the capital of Greece.

In this post I’m sharing details about visiting Cape Sounion and Temple of Poseidon at sunset with a small group tour versus doing the trip on your own or with a larger bus tour or private transfer. Afterwards, you’ll be able to decide which option is best for you. At the end of this blog post I have included a map with all the places mentioned in this post.

Things to Know about Visiting Temple of Poseidon

  • Entrance tickets are only available on-site (pay with cash, debit/credit card)
  • Expect a long line at the ticket office, especially when tour buses arrive, around one hour before sunset (get there 90 minutes before sunset to avoid the longest queue)

  • The site closes at sunset – you can’t stay later
  • You can take: bus, rental car, group tour, or private tour to Temple of Poseidon

Sunset Temple of Poseidon Tour from Athens

Visiting the Temple of Poseidon in Sounion from Athens is typically a half-day trip, but if you have a car, you can make it a full-day trip with longer stops at the beach and dining spots.

The scenic drive along the Athenian Riviera combined with watching the sunset at the ancient and majestic Temple of Poseidon makes this one of the best day trips from Athens.

Getting to Temple of Poseidon

The Temple of Poseidon is located on top of a cliff in Cape Sounion, on the southernmost tip of the Attica peninsula. It’s about 62 km southeast of Athens on the coastal route and about 70 km using inland roadways.

Driving

The driving route from Athens to the Temple of Poseidon offers a couple of options: along the coastline or inland, and both take about 1 hour 30 minutes without stops or traffic delays.

The most scenic route is the Athens Riviera coastline, but the inland route is smoother and easier driving, so it’s not a bad idea to take the scenic route to Cape Sounion and return to Athens via the inland route.

In the image below you can see the two driving routes from Athens to Cape Sounion and the Temple of Poseidon.

Bus

For the slowest and cheapest option, take Ktel Atticus bus from Athens to Cape Sounion. It costs 12.50 euro (cash only, paid on the bus) for a return ticket and takes about 2 hours to get to Cape Sounion. Check the schedule for Ktel bus and latest info.

Group Tour

Tours from Athens to Sounion Temple of Poseidon are typically for 4 to 6 hours depending on the time of year and the tour operator. There are group tours available throughout the day but the sunset tour to Temple of Poseidon is the most popular half-day tour.

This is the Temple of Poseidon small group tour that I took, and I enjoyed it immensely! Our guide Theo (Teddy) was entertaining, personable, and knowledgeable, and it really felt like having a local Greek friend as the tour guide. He is super passionate about Greek history and clearly loves being a guide.

For the cheapest Temple of Poseidon tour ($24 USD—around 20 Euros) I could find, the reviews are mixed, so I recommend that you contact the tour operator to verify pick-up and drop-off points in advance if you book this tour.

Private Transfer

This sunset private tour to Cape Sounio Temple of Poseidon offers flexibility for pick-up times and location, including airport pickup or Port Piraeus. I have not done this tour, but the reviews are impressive, all 5 stars!

You can also inquire at your hotel for their recommendations on hiring a private tour to Cape Sounion and Temple of Poseidon.

Athens to Cape Sounion Scenic Stops

Lake Vouliagmeni

A short drive from Athens, the crystal-clear waters of Lake Vouliagmeni, fed by thermal springs, provide a warm swimming spot year-round.

If you want to stop and swim here, you’ll need to pay a fee. Otherwise, it’s a great photo op from above with dramatic limestone cliffs overlooking the pristine aquamarine waters. This was the first stop on the small group tour I took from Athens.

Independent travelers can stop for a swim at Lake Vouliagmeni

Beaches

Alimos

Within about a 20-minute drive from central Athens, you can reach Kalamaki Beach and Akti Iliou in the south Athens suburb of Alimos. There you can find beach clubs and a small public stretch of beach as well.

Glyfada

A short drive to the south of Athens, the coastal town of Glyfada is another option for a stop along the Athenian Riviera.

All the half-day tours to Cape Sounion only pass by the town for a quick view, but if you have a car, you can stop and visit the beach and grab a coffee by the sea.

Palaia Fokaia

In cooler weather when it’s not warm enough for swimming and sunbathing, a good beach stop is Palaia Fokaia in Anavyssos. The beach is small, but you can walk along the water, watch the waves, and enjoy the tranquility of the Aegean Sea.

On the tour I took we stopped at a fairly new restaurant called Calostus, where the service and food were very good. I had grilled shrimp and zucchini balls and sat outside so I could hear the waves and feel the sun. The place was almost empty except for our small tour group, while the restaurant next to us, Galene Fish Restaurant, was packed with people. Another dining option next door to Galene is The 4 Brothers Tavern.

Cape Sounion Beach

When the weather is warmest (May – October) and the beach beckons, a stop at Cape Sounion Beach is the perfect stop for a swim in the Aegean Sea below the cliffs of Temple of Poseidon. Or relax and enjoy seaside dining on the Athenian Riviera with gorgeous views to let your mind drift away.

Here you can enjoy the public beach or rent a sunbed or beach umbrella and soak up the coastal vibe.

Although I didn’t get a chance to try any of the dining options around Cape Sounion Beach, I did some research about the restaurants nearby, and I would like to try Marida Seafood Restaurant and also Meze by Poseidon.

Temple of Poseidon at Cape Sounion

Marvel at the 5th century BCE Temple of Poseidon dedicated to the god of the sea, accompanied by gorgeous seaside views.

It is amazing to see the moon rise by the Temple of Poseidon and watch the sunset over the Aegean Sea. I did this tour on my last day in Athens, and it was outstanding!

A few things to be aware of when you visit the Temple of Poseidon:

  1. Expect a crowd of people because the sunset tour is one of the most popular Athens tours.
  2. Self-guided: plan to arrive 90 minutes before sunset to avoid the rush of tour groups that arrive one hour before sunset.
  3. Expect a line at the ticket office because you can’t buy tickets online in advance.
  4. Don’t expect your group tour guide to accompany you to the Temple of Poseidon. Typically, they will walk you to the ticket line, and then you’re on your own to explore until sunset; then you meet your guide back at the vehicle shortly after sunset.
  5. Staff will close the Temple of Poseidon site at sunset so you can’t linger late night at Temple of Poseidon. Seriously, they start hollering for you to leave at sunset!
  6. If you arrive early for sunset, then you’ll have time for a coffee or snack at Naos Café with a view of the sea and the Temple of Poseidon.
  7. There is a small Museum Shop at Temple of Poseidon if you are absolutely desperate to buy an over-priced souvenir.
  8. Washrooms are located next to Naos Café, and there are no other toilets at the site.

FAQ Temple of Poseidon Tour

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about doing a Cape Sounion & Temple of Poseidon tour (self-guided or with a tour company).

Where is the Temple of Poseidon?

The Temple of Poseidon is located in Cape Sounion, on the southernmost tip of the Attica peninsula. It’s about 70 km southeast of Athens.

How much is Temple of Poseidon entry fee?

The entry fee is 20 euros, payable in cash, debit or credit card.

What about skip-the-line tickets?

In 2026 there is no skip-the-line ticket for Temple of Poseidon. All ticket sales are at the entrance ticket office only.

Are there free entrance days to Temple of Poseidon?

Yes! In the off-season, from November through March, every first and third Sunday, you can visit archaeological sites, including the Temple of Poseidon, for free.

Other free entry days are:

  • Melina Mercouri Day (March 6)
  • World Heritage Day (April 18)
  • International Museums Day (May 18)
  • European Heritage Days (last weekend September)
  • OXI Day (Ohi day) October 28

Which is better self-guided or tour company?

With self-guided, you have to figure everything out yourself versus a hassle-free guided tour. But also consider that with a guided tour there is a strict itinerary versus a self-guided tour, where you have flexibility to decide where to stop and for how long.

If you love the freedom to choose what time to start, where to stop, how long to stay, and when to head back to Athens, then I recommend booking a rental car and doing the tour to Temple of Poseidon on your own.

If you prefer no-hassle travel with pick-up and drop-off at your hotel, then go with a tour company so you don’t have to deal with rental car pick-up and drop-off, parking, etc.

What’s included with a tour?

For the more expensive small group tour I took, it included hotel pick-up and drop-off, air-conditioned van, water, stop for lunch on the Athenian Riviera, fantastic historical facts and stories during the entire journey to/from Temple of Poseidon, and a little gift at the end of the tour.

People I spoke with that took the more affordable large bus tour told me they didn’t get many history facts/stories along the way, no water, no hotel pickup, and, of course, no cute gift.

If you are on a budget and only interested in transportation to/from the Temple of Poseidon, then the cheaper tour may be the best option.

Which tour is best?

I took the small group tour because it appealed to my desire for a smaller, more intimate tour, and the reviews were all 5 stars, so I figured it would be the best tour for me.

On the other hand, if you are on a budget or you don’t need the historical info and simply want transportation to and from Cape Sounion and Temple of Poseidon, then the cheaper tour on a large bus will be your best choice.

As a solo traveler I enjoy taking group tours as a way to meet other people and visit amazing places without the hassle of planning all the logistics.

How long is the tour to Temple of Poseidon?

For a self-guided tour, allow a minimum of 4 hours, but realistically 5 – 8 hours is going to be much more enjoyable, with time for stops at scenic viewpoints, beaches, or restaurants along the route.

Guided tours vary but typically take around 5 – 6 hours from pick-up time to drop-off.

What should you bring?

I recommend brining the following:

  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Windbreaker jacket during cooler months (it’s often windy on the coast and it gets chilly as soon as the sun goes down)
  • Sunscreen
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunhat
  • Water
  • Cash, debit, or credit card for the entrance fee (20 euros in 2026) and for a coffee or meal at a seaside taverna

Final Thoughts Athens to Temple of Poseidon Tour

Whether you choose a guided tour or rent a car and enjoy an independent tour you can experience breathtaking scenery along the Athenian Riviera before reaching the ancient ruins of the Temple of Poseidon.

With the amount of time saved and the relatively small fee, it makes a lot of sense to sign up for a tour to Cape Sounion & Temple of Poseidon rather than doing it on your own.

Especially for history buffs, I recommend a private tour or small group tour because you gain the benefit of an expert tour guide who clearly loves sharing their knowledge, humor, and love of all things Greek!

If you are only interested in transportation to and from the Temple of Poseidon then the cheapest option is the Ktel bus or take this larger group tour.
