LA is the place to be. You know it. We know it. Everyone knows it.
But the truth is that sometimes it’s nice to get out of the city and explore some of the other beautiful places in California.
And let’s be honest, there are some pretty stellar places within a short drive of Los Angeles.
Okay, some may be a bit longer than a short ride, but in LA you can handle a drive if it will take you somewhere awesome. Right?!
A change of scene is always a great way to hit the reset button so why not get out and explore more of the Golden State.
So, here is our list of the 12 best day trips from Los Angeles.
1. Santa Barbara
You have two options for your LA to Santa Barbara drive – the scenic route on Hwy 1 (Pacific Coast Highway) will take about 2 hours or the fastest route on Hwy 101 will get you there in about 90 minutes.
Santa Barbara is a beautiful town with the best of both worlds: it’s located on the Pacific coast and in wine country.
The beaches around Santa Barbara are some of the best in the world, so you could spend the day relaxing with the sand between your toes.

2. Palm Springs
Looking for some Zen? Then recenter yourself less than two hours away in Palm Springs.
This desert oasis has been a favorite getaway of celebrities for decades.
It’s no wonder why– with spas ready to massage away all your stress and the healing powers of natural hot springs this is a transformative place.
The stellar restaurant scene will keep your tastebuds satisfied, while the nightlife will keep you dancing ‘til dawn (if that’s your thing).
You can escape the city on Palm Springs hiking trails or take the tram to Mt San Jacinto to really get away from the city.

3. Joshua Tree National Park
A life bucket list item, Joshua Tree National Park lives up to the hype.
With the majestic beauty that only nature can provide, hikes here are what dreams are made of. Just over two-hour drive from LA you can finally check this one off your list.
Marvel at the amazing Joshua Trees on the scenic drives throughout the park.
If you’re a seasoned hiker, have a go on trails like Lost Horse Mine or Split Rock Loop. Feeling a bit more cautious? Join up with the rangers for a guided hike.
Take a stroll in the Cholla Cactus garden. You’ll walk among the remarkable “teddy-bear cholla” – cute name but just don’t ever make the mistake of hugging (or touching) this spiky desert dweller.
There’s always cool stuff to do at Joshua Tree. In fact, it makes for a perfect weekend getaway from LA. Why not spend a night or two and enjoy the glorious desert sunsets.

4. San Diego
Yes, San Diego is similar to LA, but it’s got a whole ‘nother vibe.
A day trip to San Diego is a no-brainer. In just two hours you’ll be there soaking up the sun and enjoying the laid-back surfer vibe.
Rather take public transport? The Pacific Surfliner train connects these two cities in just three hours, so you could sit back, relax, and have someone else do the driving.
You can visit Balboa Park, the USS Midway Museum, or hang out at La Jolla Beach, just a few of the things to do in San Diego.

5. Santa Catalina Island
For a true getaway from LA without a massive drive, consider Santa Catalina Island.
Just off the coast, it’ll take about 2 hours from the city including a ferry ride. But once you arrive on the island you’ll be in paradise.
Catalina is one of the Channel Islands, where water sports reign. Get in it by snorkeling, scuba diving, kayaking, or taking a glass bottom boat ride.
Out of the water, there’s plenty to do in the shore towns of Two Harbors and Avalon.

6. Malibu
Just up the coast from LA is Malibu. This beautiful city is known for its beaches, hiking trails, and of course celebrities.
Seriously, It’s no wonder why all the famous people wanted to have their homes right there on the beach. The view is incredible.
But you don’t have to be a celeb to enjoy everything Malibu has to offer.
Here you can hit the beach, surf the waves, hike the canyons, or enjoy a drink or nosh at any of the local restaurants.

7. Coronado Island
A visit to Coronado Island is like stepping into another world.
Here you’ll find the feel of a small town along main street with its boutiques and places to eat.
On the water, it’s all about sand, sun, and gorgeous views.
You can’t miss Hotel del Coronado that dates back to 1888. It’s still as impressive now as it was back then.
Located just across the bay from San Diego, Coronado is a magical day trip from Los Angeles.
8. San Juan Capistrano
Less than an hour’s drive south of downtown, San Juan Capistrano is a lovely day trip from Los Angeles.
If you’d rather enjoy a train ride to San Juan Capistrano, you’ll arrive in just over an hour.
This quaint town offers quite a bit to do. The most popular is to explore the 18th century San Juan Capistrano Mission.
When it’s time to eat, not to worry – there are a number of places to eat and shops to check out within the town.

9. Laguna Beach
You’ll be in paradise at Laguna Beach. And it’s less than an hour south of downtown making it one of the easiest day trips from Los Angeles.
The beaches are the best, but at low tide definitely check out the sea caves and tide pools. They’re incredible.
The Pirate Tower at the north end of Victoria Beach is highly recommended – super cool.
Laguna Beach has some great nature hikes too.
Consider the Seaview Park Trail to Aliso Peak, Top of the World, or Laguna Beach Cliff Hike for the best views of the area.

10. Ojai
Ojai is a gem of a town set in the valley between the Topatopa Mountains.
Located about two hours northwest in Ventura County, it’s a rewarding day trip from Los Angeles.
With lots of unique little boutiques and cafes to explore in the town, you’ll be happy just strolling through town.
If you’re up for more of an adventure, Ojai has hiking trails, horseback riding, rock climbing, and golf courses.
11. Temecula
Temecula is one of those Los Angeles day trips that’s a no-brainer.
Conveniently located in the heart of wine country and just over an hour away.
Beyond the vineyards, a popular activity is taking a hot air balloon ride where you can see the gorgeous landscape from above.
Old Town Temecula is a great place to get a bite to eat, stroll through the shops, or head out for the evening.

12. Big Bear Lake
Big Bear Lake is a destination spot any time of year.
Known for its awesome wintertime sports like skiing and snowboarding at Bear Mountain, it’s an easy two-hour drive from LA.
When the powder is not the main event, the area is full of outdoor activities like hiking, biking, and water sports on the lake. The village offers places to eat and window shop.
With so much to do at Big Bear, it’s definitely a fun day trip from Los Angeles.
