1.  The Alamo (San Antonio)

During Texas’ war for independence in 1836 the Alamo was retaken by the Mexican army, killing most of the volunteer soldiers inside.

2.  NASA Space Center

We all know the line, “Houston, we have a problem,” that was made during the ill-fated Apollo 13 mission to the moon. So why not make a visit to the “Houston”?

At the NASA Space Center, you’ll be able to learn all about Apollo 13 and the other numerous trips to outer space.

You’ll even see tons of artifacts, including spacecraft and spacesuits used by the astronauts.

3.  Texas State Capitol

One of the best historic sites in Texas is also the most important place in the state, the Capitol Building.

Beautiful on the inside and out, the interior of the building is designed down to every little detail.

Meanwhile, outside the capitol grounds are lush, manicured gardens in downtown Austin.

4.  Fort Worth Stockyards

Fort Worth Stockyards is not just one of the best historic sites in Texas, it’s living history.

This special place is an historic district where you can get a real feel for life in the old West.

Here, you’ll be able to see a rodeo, hear live country music, and buy your own cowboy hat.

5.  San Antonio Missions National Historical Park

At the San Antonio Missions National Historic Park, you’ll get an insight into the fascinating history of Spanish colonization of Texas.

Spanish conquistadors came to the new world in search of gold and glory.

Soon after they arrived, missionaries followed, spreading Catholicism to the native people and building missionary complexes.

6.  Fort Griffin State Historic Site

During the late 1800s, Fort Griffin was established as a defensive fort in the Southern Plains.

The fort served as a basecamp for soldiers and buffalo hunters.

This beautiful home is a perfect example of how the well-to-do lived during the 19th century in Texas.

9.  Fulton Mansion State Historic Site (Rockport)

Overlooking Aransas Bay is the luxurious Fulton Mansion, one of the best historic sites in Texas.

It’s a trip to explore this lovely home and imagine what life was like back in the 1870s when it was built. Each room is perfectly restored with furnishings the way it was for the owners.

It’s super interesting to learn how innovative the home was with indoor gas lighting and flush toilet plumbing before it was commonplace.

10.  San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site

The battle of San Jacinto was the last decisive fight of Texas’ War of Independence.

It was here that the Texas militia surprised the Mexican army, taking hundreds of prisoners, including General Santa Anna, and claiming victory for Texas.

Today, the San Jacinto Battleground with its super tall monument is one of the best historic sites in Texas.

Each April San Jacinto Day Festival reenacts the battle between the Texans and the Mexican army.

11.  Goliad State Park and Historic Site & Presidio la Bahia

Located next to the state park, Presidio la Bahia is an exceptional historic site in Texas. This Spanish frontier fort, established in 1749, was the site of the Goliad Massacre in March 1836. Learn about the nine flags over Goliad and the history of this long-fought-over site.

12.  National Museum of the Pacific War (Fredericksburg)

One of the best museums about World War II is located in Texas Hill Country. The National Museum of the Pacific War began as a tribute to Admiral Chester Nimitz in his hometown, Fredericksburg.

13.  Nacogdoches (oldest town in Texas)

You can’t get more special than being the oldest town in Texas. That’s clearly why Nacogdoches is a must-do on the list of best historic sites in Texas.

Founded in 1779, this town has so much history to explore. Favorite spots are Millard’s Crossing Historic Village and Sterne Hoya House Museum.

You can also see the final resting place for many in Nacogdoches at the Oak Grove Cemetery including four of the signers of the Texas Declaration of Independence.

14.  Spindletop-Gladys City Boomtown Museum

A major event in Texas history was the discovery of oil. That’s what’s celebrated at Spindletop-Gladys City Boomtown Museum.

Dedicated to preserving and reenacting this special time, visitors will be in awe of it all. Located near the original site, you can explore a post office, general store, and working print shop.

The main event, however, is the working replica gusher. This shoots out water instead of oil like the actual event back in 1901. Nevertheless, it’s still a site to behold.

15.  Mission Dolores State Historic Site

The Mission Dolores State Historical Site is another example of Spanish efforts to colonize and convert Native Americans.

Built in 1721, the mission no longer stands, but historical records and archaeological discoveries confirm its existence.

Visitors can learn about the history of the mission and the Native American experience with the settlers at the museum.

The area is a beautiful site with great hiking trails, in fact the El Camino Real de los Tejas National Historic Trail passes through this site.
