Malacca Malaysia Musicians – Flashback Friday

Drumming at kite festival in Malacca Malaysia in 1993

Musicians performing at kite festival in Malacca Malaysia in 1993

Malacca Malaysia is a city I would love to visit again! In 1993 I visited Malacca for about a week staying at a guesthouse with several other female solo travelers. A few of us met again in Kuala Lumpur, another city that I would enjoy visiting again. Looking over my old photos makes me want to book a ticket to Southeast Asia.

I remember the event that I attended when I took this photo, a kite festival, but I was drawn to the music. This was an afternoon, family friendly event, not at all like my visit to the Tam-Tams in Montreal where there is a lot of drinking and indulging in the herb.

Some of the things I remember about Malacca: learning to make batiks, river boat tour, eating a meal with my hands – banana leaf rice is the name I believe. A large banana leaf is placed in front of each person, like a place mat. Rice, vegetables, and various curries are scooped onto the banana leaf by the server. It was a delicious meal, and it was fun eating with my hand and not utensils.

Next week I begin my nomadic lifestyle experiment. On Wednesday September 30th, after 16 years of calling Austin TX home, I will drive west to Alpine TX to begin my adventures. I last visited Alpine on my west Texas road trip in 2010. I am looking forward to exploring the area again, and four days of hiking in Big Bend National Park.

Back to work for now! I had no idea getting rid of all my stuff would take up so much of my time, it is my part-time job. After much procrastination I have managed to sell or give away almost all my furniture, art supplies, and three-quarters of my clothes. Five more days and I will be driving away in Yar-Yar. New adventures await!
