I enjoy especially enjoy trying out the food and drink when I visit a new region. While eating a meal I often meet other travelers or get into conversations with the staff at the restaurant or bar. I have become accustomed to dining alone while traveling but if you are nervous about the idea of solo dining I have some solo tips for eating alone.
Another way to get out and enjoy the culture while visiting a new place is to attend a concert, dance performance, or sporting event. Often times, even on the event date, there are great seats available for a single ticket to an event. I attended a Flamenco concert in Barcelona at the magnificent Palau de la Musica Catalana performing arts venue.
Sometimes there are music concerts at small venues with historical interest. I have attended concerts at both the Santa Anna church in Barcelona and the Hagia Irene in Istanbul. The old churches tend to have outstanding acoustics.
Another great way to learn about the local culture is to sign up for a class while you are traveling. Signing up for a dance class or cooking class will provide you with a way to meet other people and learn about the culture.
While visiting Montreal I met another solo traveler who was attending dance classes. She told me she had been afraid to travel alone because she felt it would be awkward to be going out alone in the evenings. By signing up for a dance class she had something to do each evening while visiting Montreal and she spent the day time exploring the city.
Walking around a city is my favorite way to explore on my own. I love it when I come across some outstanding street art or public art simply by chance. Montreal and Rio de Janeiro have some excellent street art. Even in smaller places, like Lloret de Mar on the Mediterranean coast of Spain, I found an abundance of public art during my morning walks around town.

Visiting Marrakech for the first time I enjoyed learning about the local culture through art and history. I visited modern art galleries as well as the historical museums. I stayed in the walled city (the medina) of Marrakech so I could explore the city on foot and get lost in the maze of narrow walkways. Many of the museums of […]
On my recent solo trip to the Motherland my favorite public art in Ottawa was the sculpture Maman by Louise Bourgeois. The giant spider stands in front of the National Gallery of Canada at 380 Sussex Drive. I first visited Maman on my way back from a tour of the Royal Canadian Mint and returned a second time when I viewed […]
Strolling along St Denis Street in Montreal is a perfect place for any solo traveler visiting the city. There are boutiques if you like shopping, coffee shops with Wi-Fi, art galleries to browse, street art, and dozens of restaurants to choose from – many with outdoor terraces to sit and watch the people go by […]
Jamming and dancing to the Tam Tams on a sunny Sunday afternoon at Montreal’s Mont Royal Park was a perfect finish to my solo travels in Montreal and Ottawa. What are these Tam Tams you ask? Tam Tams is the name given to the weekly summertime drumming festival that takes place on the east slope […]
My first solo trip to Ottawa – the capital of Canada – the Motherland – was in August. I took a train from Montreal and stayed in beautiful Wellington West – just south of the Ottawa River. Walking to catch the bus to my AirBnB accommodations I stopped on the overpass from the Via Rail […]
Istanbul Archaeological Museum located near Topkapi Palace in the Sultanahmet neighborhood is an extraordinary museum. I have been twice and will visit again on my next solo travels to Istanbul Turkey – one of my favorite cities. Ishtar Gate and Processional Way was constructed around 575 BC and was the eighth gate within the walls of the […]
This virtual graffiti tour of Montreal street art is a follow-up to my post last week. I love walking the streets of a city and enjoy seeing the street art along the way. Montreal has an active street art community and has been host to the Under Pressure International Graffiti Convention for the past 19 […]
I love street art finds while strolling around a city like Montreal – murals and graffiti are plentiful. My third solo trip to Montreal began with a welcome coolness in the air. August in Austin TX brings hot dry weather and the opportunity to walk around outside during the day or night and be comfortable […]
In Montreal my favorite museum to visit is the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and yesterday I attended the fabulous Fabergé exhibit. I used to make jewelry and do cloisonné enamel work so I have an idea of the craftsmanship required to create these fine works of art. The extraordinary Fabergé Imperial Peter the Great Easter […]
Traveling alone I like to travel light so that carrying my bags on my own is easy. I have used one roller style carry-on suitcase and a small backpack for all of my solo trips. My favorite keepsake souvenirs to buy while traveling are earrings. Guys you should keep this in mind when you are […]
My third solo trip to Montreal begins next week and I started thinking about things to do and see on this visit to one of my favorite cities of the world. Previously I have stayed at Montreal Central hostel which is next to the central bus station and near St Catherine Street – a great […]
